Fish Island Old Ford in East London

There’s more to Fish Island than fish, specifically smoked salmon. In fact my brother-in-law used to work as a mechanic on the Olympic Park side of the Island but I used to pop into an old rickety cafe next to the second hand tyre merchant that sold really good toasted bacon sandwiches so yes there’s more to Fish Island Old Ford in East London than fish. Here’s a useful link: Trendy coffee shops, exhibition spaces, bars and independent restaurants with small plates.

According to Hidden London, Fish Island and Old Ford’s road celebrate all types of fish: Dace Road, Roach Road and Bream Street. The article goes on to say: Fish Island was until recently dominated by waste disposal and recycling facilities and wholesale and distribution warehouses, together with some offices.

The article is well worth reading, especially the section that details the history of Old Ford: Old Ford’s name was first recorded in 1268, although a ‘Robert of Aleford’ – who was mentioned in 1244 – may have come from here.

Forman’s  has had a presence in the Old Ford/ Stratford area for over 100 years and have perfected their salmon curing methods over these years producing an, “..Artisan London Cure Smoked Salmon”.

In the past Fish Island Old Ford in East London was synonymous with Forman’s restaurant but not now a days. Gentrification has reached this industrial ridden, almost forgotten area and the Island is now known for it’s eclectic apartment ie Fish Island Village. Hidden London lets us know that, In September 2016 scores of artists and start-up businesses were evicted from Vittoria Wharf – a former warehouse that had been declared an asset of community value in 2013 – in advance of its proposed demolition.

Here’s a wonderful demonstration from Forman’s salmon carving expert, Guinness World Record Holder Darren Matson, with narration from Lance Forman himself

Here’s the Guinness world record for salmon slicing: Salmon slicing world record – Gordon Ramsay. Gordon Ramsay challenges an expert to the world record for hand slicing smoked salmon for Cookalong Live show.
